Recycling Meets Queuing Theory

Every year our county hosts a mega-recycling day when thousands of people drive to a big parking lot to discard unwanted items and recyclables. There are drop-off stations for chemicals, electronics, paper, prescription meds, eye glasses and other items.

Here’s a simulator program that helped officials model this complicated vehicle queuing problem. The stakes are high; a well executed station layout saves residents thousands of hours of combined wait time.
